Today I Am Thankful...

Proverbs 31:17
New International Version (NIV)
17 She sets about her work vigorously;
    her arms are strong for her tasks.
..for permanent press and wash and wear clothing.  I remember looking forward to my mother setting up the ironing board because it was my chance to watch the soap operas with her, although she probably thought I was just playing quietly at her feet and not following the TV as closely as I did.   My joy over ironing day faded when she taught me how to iron.  Now I pull laundry out of the dryer, shake it out and declare it close enough.  We all know how to iron clothes in my household and will do so only when necessary, and because of this,  I have saved my family from becoming soap opera addicts.  There ought to be a Proverbs 31 verse for that.

God Sings

This is so nice to think upon before retiring for bed.  My God sings over me!  I am humbled and amazed by such love.  I sang over my baby as he went to sleep, always making sure to sing, "Happy Birthday to Jesus," "Jesus Loves Me," and "Take Me Out to the Ballgame."  To wake him in the morning I sang, "The Steadfast Love of the Lord Never Ceases."  In the wee hours of the morning, as he suffered from an ear infection or other malady, I sang whatever song came to mind; and he never seemed to mind my off-key singing; as it was an offering of love.  So I will go to sleep tonight knowing my Father will quite me with His song of love.
Proverbs 3:24
English Standard Version (ESV)
24 If you lie down, you will not be afraid;
    when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.

Of Family Trips and Lost Sheep

Bubbleator at the 1962 Worlds Fair lifted hundreds of visitors each day to the World of Tomorrow. The Space-Age elevator could hold up to 150 people.
Luke 15:1-7
English Standard Version (ESV)
The Parable of the Lost Sheep
15 Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him. 2 And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.”

3 So he told them this parable: 4 “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? 5 And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. 6 And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ 7 Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.
Isaiah 40:26
New International Version (NIV)
26 Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens:
    Who created all these?
He who brings out the starry host one by one
    and calls forth each of them by name.
Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing.
Luke 19:10
New International Version (NIV)
10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
A picture of 1962's Seattle World's Fair Bubbleator may seem like a strange choice for the Parable of the Lost Sheep, but it works for me.  I was there with my family when my older brother was briefly lost.  My memory may be sketchy but as I recall he was taking a ride for himself in the Bubbleator.    Surrounded by sisters he likely wanted a moment alone and coming from a town without elevators, the Bubbleator was a big temptation.  Instead of my parents figuring they had enough children so why worry about him, they fetched him back into their fold.  Summer is coming along with family vacation trips.  Children will be lost and found.  My God who holds the stars in place never loses one, and my Jesus is a finder of lost sheep.
Still watch your children.  They are precious in His sight and the jewels in His crown.

Joy Through and Through

Psalm 16
English Standard Version (ESV)
You Will Not Abandon My Soul

A Miktam[a] of David.

16 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
2 I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
    I have no good apart from you.”
3 As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,
    in whom is all my delight.[b]
4 The sorrows of those who run after[c] another god shall multiply;
    their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
    or take their names on my lips.
5 The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;
    you hold my lot.
6 The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
    indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.
7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;
    in the night also my heart instructs me.[d]
8 I have set the Lord always before me;
    because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being[e] rejoices;
    my flesh also dwells secure.
10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
    or let your holy one see corruption.[f]
11 You make known to me the path of life;
    in your presence there is fullness of joy;
    at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

My God In Every Circumstance

“The secret is Christ in me, not me in a different set of circumstances.”

― Elisabeth Elliot, Keep a Quiet Heart

2 Corinthians 12:8-10
English Standard Version (ESV)
8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
2 Samuel 22:3
King James Version (KJV)
3 The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.
Psalm 91: 1-2
1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
    will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.[a]
2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
    my God, in whom I trust.”
Romans 8:18
English Standard Version (ESV)
Future Glory
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
I found myself missing my youth yesterday as I walked this beach with my husband.  Actually my husband and the dog walked ahead of me because I was slowed by rheumatoid arthritis pain.  My last memories of this beach were running and playing on it as a child.   It was a favorite picnic place for my parents.  In the days before fast food restaurants and play lands this was a good place for children and we loved it.  Yesterday it was nearly deserted and the place where we would eat around a fire was all overgrown.  I found myself fighting a sense of melancholy along with the pain.  Life has moved on.  The large rock that sheltered us from the wind and allowed our fire to burn, however, was still standing firm so many year later.  I am reminded that God is like that rock, unchanging, unmoving, a sweet shelter for His children, a warm place to rest and be refreshed.  My circumstances may have changed but my Jesus hasn't.

Safely Sleeping

Because I don't have to get up early for work tomorrow, I've stayed up late waiting for the young man who lives in my house but doesn't want to be blogged about to return home from work.  I got a, "Hi, Mom!" as he passed into his room; but that's enough to know he's safe and sound.  May God give all of his traveling mercies this first weekend of the summer.  I'm so sleepy now I will have to retire soon for the night.  I do love it when everyone is safely bedded down under my roof.

Blessed Is the Nation

Psalm 33:12-22
English Standard Version (ESV)
12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
    the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!
13 The Lord looks down from heaven;
    he sees all the children of man;
14 from where he sits enthroned he looks out
    on all the inhabitants of the earth,
15 he who fashions the hearts of them all
    and observes all their deeds.
16 The king is not saved by his great army;
    a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
17 The war horse is a false hope for salvation,
    and by its great might it cannot rescue.
18 Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,
    on those who hope in his steadfast love,
19 that he may deliver their soul from death
    and keep them alive in famine.
20 Our soul waits for the Lord;
    he is our help and our shield.
21 For our heart is glad in him,
    because we trust in his holy name.
22 Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us,
    even as we hope in you.

I had my husband take this picture of our flag today.  I thought it beautiful. This Psalm is my prayer for our country.   May we as a nation find our hope in the Lord who has shown us abundant grace and mercy beyond what we could ever deserve or hope to earn.

Pray For the Innocents

The Killing of the Innocents by Herod (detail), Leon Cogniet ca.1824.
Matthew 2:18
New International Version (NIV)
18 “A voice is heard in Ramah,
    weeping and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children
    and refusing to be comforted,
    because they are no more.”[a]
Romans 12:15
New International Version (NIV)
15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.

This paragraph from what I just read on the Voice of the Martyrs website about Nigeria gives us all reason to pray because the innocents are still dying.  More has to be done than just holding up a hash tag sign on Twitter saying bring back our girls, even if it is meant with all sincerity. We must pray and pray earnestly.

Boko Haram, whose name means 'Western education is a sin', continues to pursue its goal of carving out a separate Islamic state from Nigeria's northern regions where it can establish its ultra-conservative interpretation of Sharia law. The insurgency often targets schools, government institutions and religious minorities – mostly Christians – as part of a broader strategy to create a purely Islamic society in northern Nigeria. In 2014 alone, it's estimated more than 2,500 innocents have been murdered by Boko Haram, many of whom are known Christians whose communities have been pillaged and churches set ablaze.

Because I Needed a Laugh...

Proverbs 17:22
English Standard Version (ESV)
22 A joyful heart is good medicine,
    but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
…tonight, I watched the season finale of ABC's "The Middle."    The fictional Heck family took a road trip to Disneyland World.  (Daughter Sue had won a trip to Disneyland but they read the tickets wrong and instead drove to Disney World.)  I'm a fan of this show, the only current network comedy that I do watch.  Since it is still my dream to take one more family trip to Disneyland before the young man who lives in my house but doesn't want to be blogged about leaves home, the show met me where I am and took me where I want to be.  It made me laugh.

Grandpa and The Well Worn Path

Proverbs 3:5-6
New American Standard Bible (NASB)
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart
And do not lean on your own understanding.
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He will make your paths straight.
Deuteronomy 5:33
English Standard Version (ESV)
33 You shall walk in all the way that the Lord your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land that you shall possess.
1 Peter 2:21
English Standard Version (ESV)
21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.
Staying over at my grandparents' farm meant waking up to the lowing of the cows and then looking out the upstairs bedroom window to the comforting sight of Grandpa walking the path to the milk house and the barn.  The day had started for him, but as a farmer's grandchild and not a child, it meant I could lay back in the bed shared with a sister and anticipate what I knew would be a good day to be a child.
Grandpa walked a well worn path.  There are no days off in dairy farming.  There's no calling in sick or playing hooky.  Grandpa was a faithful farmer and his cows were healthy under his care.  What I perceived as large, gentle pets were his livelihood.  He was a faithful man in other ways, faithful to God, his wife, his children and grandchildren.  He was respected in his community.  He was steadfast, unwavering and exceedingly patient.    May my God find me faithfully walking His path until it is also well worn and evident to the generations that follow.

Gathering At the Well

John 4:14
English Standard Version (ESV)
14 but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.[a] The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
John 4:27-29
King James Version (KJV)
27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?

28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,

29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
John 4:39-42
New American Standard Bible (NASB)
The Samaritans
39 From that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all the things that I have done.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 Many more believed because of His word; 42 and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed the Savior of the world.”

With summer approaching I am reminded of happy, blessed times spent on my grandparents' farm, as they would take their grandchildren, two by two, in turns to stay with them.  The plumbing had all been brought indoors but the hand pump in the yard by the kitchen still worked; and, on warm summer days, Grandma washed our hair under it's stream.  It seems like there's always been women where water is drawn, as it was with the divine appoint Jesus had with the Samaritan woman at the well.  His simple request for a drink of water lead the woman and others of her people to the ever welling spring of eternal life.

Psalm 39:7
English Standard Version (ESV)
7 “And now, O Lord, for what do I wait?

Lamentations 3:26
English Standard Version (ESV)
26 It is good that one should wait quietly
    for the salvation of the Lord.
Again, I am falling asleep at the computer.  Forgive me.  I will go and be still.  It's so much better than a storm of weariness.

Grace Upon Grace

Mark 4:37-39
King James Version (KJV)
37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.

38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?

39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
John 1:16
New American Standard Bible (NASB)
16 For of His fullness [a]we have all received, and [b]grace upon grace.
In a storm and tossed about I am still a receiver of God's great grace.  It's a truth that's hard to hang onto when I'm clutching at any and all life preservers being tossed my way, even the ones that have no hope of floating.  It's only His grace that keeps me afloat.  It's only His grace that preserves my life.

Sometimes Fathers Know Best

Proverbs 4:1-9
Living Bible (TLB)
4 1-2 Young men, listen to me as you would to your father. Listen, and grow wise, for I speak the truth—don’t turn away. 3 For I, too, was once a son, tenderly loved by my mother as an only child, and the companion of my father. 4 He told me never to forget his words. “If you follow them,” he said, “you will have a long and happy life. 5 Learn to be wise,” he said, “and develop good judgment and common sense! I cannot overemphasize this point.”[a] 6 Cling to wisdom—she will protect you. Love her—she will guard you.

7 Getting wisdom is the most important thing you can do! And with your wisdom, develop common sense and good judgment. 8-9 If you exalt wisdom, she will exalt you. Hold her fast, and she will lead you to great honor; she will place a beautiful crown upon your head.
Sometimes you just have to trust that a father knows what he's doing.  My husband and I were driving down the road to rescue the young man who lives in our house but doesn't want to be blogged about because his car broke down on his way to work.  As we drove I got a call from that young man asking if he could take the ride offered to him from a good samaritan who had stopped.  While my first thought was, "What if they're ax murderers??!!" my husband was calmly approving.  So I turned to my husband in alarm and spoke that first thought.  He then said, in deference to me, that he could accept the ride if they didn't look like ax murderers.  They didn't and he accepted.  As I breathed a prayer the next call was an offer to stay and help Dad push the car off the road.  Dad knows and God knows too.

Dear Dad,
It's been a while since I wrote.  Your children still love and miss you.  Tonight I'm reminded how you rescued me after I burned up a car engine going over a mountain without a word of complaint or even a scolding.  You were there for me when I needed you.  Thank you.  You also seemed to understand how to react to degrees of foolishness.  When your oldest son and a nephew drove your parts car in reverse, because it only moved in reverse, up the power line and got it stuck there, you didn't rescue them or the car.  It's probably still there in the brush, a family ebenezer, because it had brought them safe that far but no further.

For This World Is Not My Home

Hebrews 13:14-16
New International Version (NIV)
14 For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come.

15 Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name. 16 And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus.
Today I watched a new video by Sidewalk Prophets, their "Keeping Making Me" song.  It has clever and creative stop motion animation in it; and, since someone dear to me is a clever and creative animator and artist, I liked it.  What spoke to me was the characters that were leading another to Jesus.  Who can I find and bring to Him; and am I willing and obedient to do so?  I want to be.  It's my call of duty.

I'll Fly Away

1 Thessalonians 4:17
New International Version (NIV)
17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
It's been a warm, muggy day, so my husband and I took his dog down to the beach.  As they were walking I settled myself on a log and took this picture of the sun setting, feeling very one with nature as I did so.  Then the dog ran towards me and tried to leap over my log.  We thought she was cute until we saw the dead sea lion behind it.  She wanted to roll in it!  Aaagggghhhh!  There's a reason why dogs are dogs.  The poor sea lion had no dignity in death.  I thought the beach was a little pungent tonight but was enjoying the sunset and the cruise ship gliding by.  I won't take a cruise ship out of this life, but one day I'll fly away.

Of Mary, Jesus, and Mother's Day

Jesus meets His Mother, IV (1998) by Adolf Lachman.
Luke 1:46-48
New International Version (NIV)
Mary’s Song

46 And Mary said:

“My soul glorifies the Lord
47     and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has been mindful
    of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
Matthew 1:21
King James Version (KJV)
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.
John 19:25-27
King James Version (KJV)
25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!

27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
This Mother's Day had me thinking about Mary, the mother of Jesus, and her womb that cradled God.  Like most evangelical protestants, I'm not always comfortable with Mary, unless someone think I venerate or pray to her.  I can  place her at the manger but not always at the cross.  There have been many grieving parents in the news and there are many more of whom I'll never know as they sorrow behind closed doors.  But God knows.  He too lost a child.  God understood the sacrifice but I wonder if Mary truly did, as she was a very human mother, and we humans struggle to comprehend the Eternal.  So as the news continues to play out over children lost to us but not to God, I consider Mary.

9 Open your mouth, judge righteously,

Psalm 82:4
English Standard Version (ESV)
4 Rescue the weak and the needy;

Isaiah 43:1b
English Standard Version (ESV)
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
    I have called you by name, you are mine.
I tried to take a moment to read each name from the list of kidnapped Nigerian schoolgirls, but it called for more than a moment.  It called for my prayers.  These girls we call ours are also God's.  His Son died for the evil we perpetuate upon one another.   What I can't understand, He does; and I can trust Him.  So I pray for the Heavenly Father's dearly loved Nigerian daughters that they will be brought back home.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7
English Standard Version (ESV)
6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.
Galatians 5:22

28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Numbers 32:23b
New King James Version (NKJV)
and be sure your sin will find you out.
The Bible verses are for my mom, three describe her and two she often quoted.  This picture of a mother calmly reading while her daughter flies off the dresser reminds me of Mom, who, most of the time at least, could keep her head when all about her children losing theirs.   She had ways to cope before there ever was such things as "Mother's Day Out" or "Me Time."   She could cope as long as there were floors to mop; and there were always floors to mop.  She would shoo her children outdoors with orders not to come in until the floors were dry, and her floors took an uncommonly long time to dry.  Here's to Mom, who had a Scripture verse and plan for every season.  I called her blessed.

On Being A Lamb

Psalm 100:3
New King James Version (NKJV)
3 Know that the Lord, He is God;
It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves;[a]
We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.
John 17:15-18
English Standard Version (ESV)
15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.[a] 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them[b] in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.
Colossians 3:10
English Standard Version (ESV)
10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.
John 10:27
New King James Version (NKJV)
27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.
As the youngest daughter, I carefully watched my mother and my older sisters to learn the ways of women; and I'm still watching them.  As they are all godly women, they continue to inspire me, and teach me and lead me.  I was and still am the lamb in that flock and together we are all sheep in our Shepherd's pasture.  I pray that we will faithfully follow His voice as He leads us Home.
Lamb of God - Eden's Bridge

I was so lost I should have died
But you have brought me to
your side
To be led by your staff and rod
And to be called a Lamb of God

Because Young Men...

When I Grow Up Anthony Cucchi
…dream dreams.
Ecclesiastes 11:9
English Standard Version (ESV)
9 Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth. Walk in the ways of your heart and the sight of your eyes. But know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.
1 Timothy 4:12
English Standard Version (ESV)

12 Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
Luke 10:27-28
New International Version (NIV)
27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[a]; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b]”

28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”

We Living Houses

1 Peter 2:4-6
New International Version (NIV)
The Living Stone and a Chosen People

4 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him— 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house[a] to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For in Scripture it says:

“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
    a chosen and precious cornerstone,
and the one who trusts in him
    will never be put to shame.”[b]
2 Corinthians 5:17
English Standard Version (ESV)
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.[a] The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
My little house under the weeping willow tree could be generously called a cozy cottage.  It had a sweet look to it, a setting that would appeal to those who romanticize a simpler life.  Living there I learned that cottage living wasn't all that.   I missed cupboards that closed, closet space, high ceilings, windows that let in light, and just room to breathe.  I'm thankful to be in this house of the level path.  It isn't as lovely as the house we lost, but it's a good house, more than sufficient for me and mine, not a dream house but a real one.  I like this quote by C.S. Lewis.  I'd like to think that God is indeed building me into a palace.  I don't see His palace design, hampered by my cottage feelings; but, if it's how God sees me, I'll accept the grace of His vision.  I'll trust the Builder.
Brooke Fraser - Shadow Feet Music Video
"Shadowfeet"

Walking, stumbling on these shadowfeet
towards home, a land that i've never seen
I am changing; less and less asleep
made of different stuff than when i began
And I've sensed it all along
fast approaching is the day

[CHORUS:]
when the world has fallen out from under me
I'll be found in you, still standing
When the sky rolls up and the mountains fall on their knees
when time and space are through
I'll be found in you

There's distraction buzzing in my head
saying in the shadows it's easier to stay
but I've heard rumours of true reality
whispers of a well-lit way

[CHORUS]

You make all things new

[CHORUS]

[CHORUS 2:]
When the world has fallen out from under me
I'll be found in you, still standing
Every fear and accusation under my feet
when time and space are through
I'll be found in you
