When We Want to Take a Pass

Have I sinned? What have I done to you, O watcher of all humanity? Why have you made me your target? Am I a burden to you? Why not just pardon my sin and take away my guilt? Job 7: 20-21a

Job has experienced great personal loss. God has permitted Satan to take away his family, wealth, and health. Job doesn’t know all about this agreement, but does acknowledge God as having a major role in what has happened, and concludes that God is engaging in a dark game of tag, with God being “it”.

Here Job is asking God to end the game of tag. He knows God will win, so he wants to get tagged so the game will end. In fact, Job wonders why God started the game in the first place. Why does God bother to intervene in such a negative way with a mere human? Doesn’t He have better things to do? Job is even willing to plead guilty and take the rap for whatever he may have done, just get this case closed, because to live like this is too painful.

Paradoxically, we do want God to intervene in our lives, just not in a negative way. As the gospel song says “While on others thou art calling, do not pass me by.” God is welcome as a source of comfort. We just would like Him to pass us by when He deals negatively. At least I do. The problem is we may not have a choice. Did Job?

I Don't Know Who the Artist Is...

...but I really like this!  I'm so glad we know the author; the God-breathed words of Paul:
Hebrews 12:2 New King James Version (NKJV)
2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Been There, Done That, and Lived to Tell About It

Psalm 91:11 English Standard Version (ESV)
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you in all your ways.

Matthew 18:10 English Standard Version (ESV)
10 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven.[a]

Psalm 34:7 English Standard Version (ESV)
7 The angel of the Lord encamps
    around those who fear him, and delivers them.

When I look at these images that could have been from my childhood, I wonder how we survived.  We sure kept our guardian angels on their toes!  How much retraining has had to be done for the angels watching over today's children facing dangers we had never foreseen?   Tonight's news has been so full of gun violence that I think it must take all the courage parents can muster to let their children out the door.  As much as I would like to wrap our little ones in cotton and steel,  I know I still can't guarantee their safety; but the God who knows and understands these fears is well able to watch over our little ones.  That there are baby boomers now growing into old age is a testament to that truth.

When Jesus Is In the Boat

Isaiah 12:3  English Standard Version (ESV)

3 With joy you[a] will draw water from the wells of salvation.

Matthew 8:23English Standard Version (ESV)
Jesus Calms a Storm
23 And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him.

I'm living in an empty nest once again now that my young man who doesn't want to be blogged about is firmly back at the university.   The cat he grew up with left us too this summer, having succumbed to the need to go off and die alone.  Today, out of a desire to hold something in my arms, I had his dog on my lap until I coughed, loosed my grip, and he fled for his watching and waiting position at the front door.  I know he's waiting for his master's return, as am I.

What to do when the boat you are sailing on changes course without your permission or volition and your fellow sailors are given their own ships to captain? (See, I had to make a tie-in to the picture I'm using for this post.)  If Jesus is on your boat don't abandon ship.  Ride the waves, weather the storm, find peace in the doldrums and joy in the journey.  If you still need a life jacket, the Savior understands.

Now where is that dog who needs a cuddle?

Psalm 19:1 New King James Version (NKJV)

The Perfect Revelation of the Lord
To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.

19 The heavens declare the glory of God;
And the firmament shows His handiwork.

Psalm 36:5 New King James Version (NKJV)

5 Your mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens;
Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.

Psalm 8:3-4 New King James Version (NKJV)

3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,
4 What is man that You are mindful of him,
And the son of man that You visit him?
...dazzled by God.

Play Your Bell

For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this? Esther 4:14

To me, to think we are in a certain situation by accident is the worst possible thought. To think we are in a certain situation by God’s design is the best possible thought. The latter is what Queen Esther’s cousin, Mordecai, had in mind in this famous quote.

At one time I traveled with a men’s singing group. We also played handbells as part of our concerts. The director used to use the handbells as an object lesson. He pointed out that if a bell ringer fails to play his bells at the proper moment, no one else could do it for him/her. God had given us each ”bells” in life to ring, and it was our responsibility to ring them on time.

That makes me feel a little uncomfortable, because I don’t want God to rely on unreliable me to accomplish His plan. What if I don’t answer the bell (no pun intended)? What is interesting in the Mordecai quote is that he does say that the Jews would be delivered, but without Esther’s part in it. God’s plan wasn’t going to be stopped by a failure to be courageous, but she would miss out on the action.

How detailed are His designs? Are the “big” situations, decisions, etc. officially part of God’s plan, God’s call, while the rest of life is a series of coincidences or accidents, or are they all infused with intentionality on God’s part? How many times has He worked around me because I didn’t act on the situation presented me? How about you? I hope for both of us, the number of times is small, and will stay that way.

Mandisa: "Born For This (ESTHER)" - Official Lyric Video

Faultless, Flawless, Forgiven

Galatians 2:20 New King James Version (NKJV)
20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

Jude 24 New King James Version (NKJV)
Glory to God
24 Now to Him who is able to keep you[a] from stumbling,
And to present you faultless
Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy,

Philippians 1:6 New King James Version (NKJV)
6 being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;

I had the great privilege today of attending an outdoor baptism of middle school campers at our local beach.  It's both a beautiful and awkward age.  I pray that they will know how precious they are just as they are, but also that they will continue to grow and bloom in the love of their Lord.  Tonight I finished uploading the song, "Flawless," by MercyMe.  It's a good song for both middle schoolers just learning and adults needing a reminder of the work of the cross in our lives.

"Crazy Faith" by John Waller

It's Sunday!

Get off the couch and get to church!

Because He Called...

John 10:29English Standard Version (ESV)
29 My Father, who has given them to me,[a] is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.

1 Peter 2:9English Standard Version (ESV)
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

Hebrews 12:28English Standard Version (ESV)
28 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe,

Ephesians 2:8-9English Standard Version (ESV)
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Colossians 1:13-14English Standard Version (ESV)
13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

...I answered.  Tonight I am thankful that God called me to Himself.  If it had been up to me, it would never have happened.  I would be left trying desperately to find a savior among impotent, mortal men, seeking validation from vain things and forgiveness from the unforgiven.  Without Christ we would all be dead men walking; however with Christ we are resurrected men: living, breathing followers of our risen Lord.

A Psalm For When Love Hurts

Frederic Leighton (British, 1830-1896), oil on fabric. Oh, that I had wings like a Dove! For then would I fly away, and be at rest." Psalm 55:6, 1865
Psalm 55 New King James Version (NKJV)

Trust in God Concerning the Treachery of Friends
To the Chief Musician. With stringed instruments.[a] A Contemplation[b] of David.

55 Give ear to my prayer, O God,
And do not hide Yourself from my supplication.
2 Attend to me, and hear me;
I am restless in my complaint, and moan noisily,
3 Because of the voice of the enemy,
Because of the oppression of the wicked;
For they bring down trouble upon me,
And in wrath they hate me.
4 My heart is severely pained within me,
And the terrors of death have fallen upon me.
5 Fearfulness and trembling have come upon me,
And horror has overwhelmed me.
6 So I said, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove!
I would fly away and be at rest.
7 Indeed, I would wander far off,
And remain in the wilderness. Selah
8 I would hasten my escape
From the windy storm and tempest.”
9 Destroy, O Lord, and divide their tongues,
For I have seen violence and strife in the city.
10 Day and night they go around it on its walls;
Iniquity and trouble are also in the midst of it.
11 Destruction is in its midst;
Oppression and deceit do not depart from its streets.
12 For it is not an enemy who reproaches me;
Then I could bear it.
Nor is it one who hates me who has exalted himself against me;
Then I could hide from him.
13 But it was you, a man my equal,
My companion and my acquaintance.
14 We took sweet counsel together,
And walked to the house of God in the throng.
15 Let death seize them;
Let them go down alive into hell,
For wickedness is in their dwellings and among them.
16 As for me, I will call upon God,
And the Lord shall save me.
17 Evening and morning and at noon
I will pray, and cry aloud,
And He shall hear my voice.
18 He has redeemed my soul in peace from the battle that was against me,
For there were many against me.
19 God will hear, and afflict them,
Even He who abides from of old. Selah
Because they do not change,
Therefore they do not fear God.
20 He has put forth his hands against those who were at peace with him;
He has broken his covenant.
21 The words of his mouth were smoother than butter,
But war was in his heart;
His words were softer than oil,
Yet they were drawn swords.
22 Cast your burden on the Lord,
And He shall sustain you;
He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.
23 But You, O God, shall bring them down to the pit of destruction;
Bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days;
But I will trust in You.

Safely Sleeping

The Child of the Regiment (detail) - John Everett Millais 1855

Matthew 11:28-29 New International Version (NIV)
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

A friend responded to a Facebook post of mine with a short series of nonsensical letters.  When I admitted I just didn't understand her post, she responded that she had fallen asleep with her home in her hand.  I'm very sleepy right now, still tired from the trip to take our young man back to college.  I think I'd better quite while this post can still be read.  May you all sleep in safety, covered by your Savior's battle jacket.

God Ideas or Good Ideas

So my God gave me the idea to call together all the leaders of the city, along with the ordinary citizens, for registration. Nehemiah 7:5

Just before this, in verse 4, Nehemiah commented on the underpopulation of Jerusalem following the rebuilding of the wall. This idea from God is an answer to this situation.

How did Nehemiah know that God had given him the idea? Or do all good ideas come from God?

I have lots of ideas. I wish I could confidently label them as from or not from the Lord. Then I would know which ones to act on. As it is, I get caught up on indecision, sometimes for a long while, not sure if the idea is good or if God would bless it. I am not sure of my own discernment of the quality of my ideas.

I suppose I could get busy and list the qualities a God-idea should have. That sounds like work, but I suppose such ideas don't appeal to my pride. They advance God's priorities in this world (I recall Gary Friesen's book Decision Making and the Will of God -- how he said decisions should be based on whether or not they are spiritually expedient. They allow for God to get the glory. They should be big enough to require God's involvement. Like I said, sounds like work. How about flipping a coin?

I like to think God gives us more ideas than we credit Him for. I mean, we often think on a human plane, not a divine one. We often pat each other on the back, when it was God all the time. May God grant us wisdom to make the God vs. human columns come out right.

Loving the Prickly

Luke 6:32 English Standard Version (ESV)
32 “If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.

John 15:10-12 New International Version (NIV)
10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.

Philippians 4:13 English Standard Version (ESV)
13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

It seems like not a day passes without the challenge to love a prickly person.  It's so common to the human condition that our very wise Savior made it a command not a request, and provided the strength to obey it.  I need to remember this so that I'm not the prickly person in someone else's day.  Remain in his love and his love remains.  If little Sara, age 4, can sing this truth, then I can too.

My God, My Strength and Portion

Psalm 73:26 by Little-Seed on Flickr

Psalm 16:5 King James Version (KJV)
5 The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.

It took a coworker's paper cut today to realize that I walk by the first aid kit and portable heart defibrillator hanging on a wall every work day without paying it any attention.  I'm so used to seeing it that I don't see it.  I hope that I'll now remember where it is in an emergency and hope that someone else will also remember if it should be my own emergency.  Although I may get so used to seeing God that I don't see Him, it does reassure me to know that God always sees me; and, because he does, he will forever be my strong heart and my abundant portion.   My body may fail but never, never my God.

He Loved Us First

1 John 4:19 New International Version (NIV)

19 We love because he first loved us.

All I Have Is Christ (feat Mike Passaro ) - Summit Worship

I once was lost in darkest night
Yet thought I knew the way
The sin that promised joy and life
Had led me to the grave
I had no hope that You would own
A rebel to Your will
And if You had not loved me first
I would refuse You still

But as I ran my hell-bound race
Indifferent to the cost
You looked upon my helpless state
And led me to the cross
And I beheld God's love displayed
You suffered in my place
You bore the wrath reserved for me
Now all I know is grace

Hallelujah! All I have is Christ
Hallelujah! Jesus is my life

Now, Lord, I would be Yours alone
And live so all might see
The strength to follow Your commands
Could never come from me
Oh Father, use my ransomed life
In any way You choose
And let my song forever be
My only boast is You

Hallelujah! All I have is Christ
Hallelujah! Jesus is my life

    and I know I will not be put to shame.

Psalm 18:39 New International Version (NIV)
39 You armed me with strength for battle;

John 1:5 New International Version (NIV)
5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.

I'm in a continual battle with a disreputable specialty pharmaceutical provider that is trying to collect for a bill that should have never been mine.  My state's health care system, mandated by Obamacare, was the reason I had to turn to this pharmacy instead of continuing with my local, trusted pharmacy.  I didn't know that it was a company that would prey on the sick, but they do and do it often if what I've read on the internet is to be believed.  Because I'm not looking forward to another frustrating phone call to answer their latest request to pay up, I found myself looking for Scripture to prepare myself for the fight.  They may be a big bad company but I have a big good God.  He's never lost a battle and never will.

The Blessing of God's Hand

Detail Rembrandt's Prodigal Son

..... the king gave him everything he asked for, because the gracious hand of the Lord his God was on him. Ezra 7:6

....for the gracious hand of his God was on him. Ezra 7:9

I felt encouraged because the gracious hand of the Lord my God was on me. Ezra 7:28

And the gracious hand of our God protected us.... Ezra 8:31

When I ponder reading through the book of Ezra, I look forward to reading these verses. So far, I haven't tired of them yet.

What they mean to me is 1) God can and will be involved in the affairs of our lives, and 2) The blessing of God makes all the difference.

I don't really think about how to "qualify" for these things, and it isn't my purpose to even explore that here. The main point to me is simply wanting these things, especially the latter. The blessing of God turns failure into success, meaningless into meaningful, futile into productive, trouble into protection, wasted into redeemed. And on and on you or I could go.

Ezra discerned that his effectiveness was due to God, and he "bothers" to point this out. No, he is all too glad to say he saw God at work. It wasn't a set of good coincidences, fate, luck or chance. God was blesser and he was the blessed. I want that all the time. Do you?

Tumbling Tumbleweeds

It's late and I should be sleeping, but it seems I got my sleeping done in church this morning.  Sigh.  It was nice, though, to sit as one of three sisters in a pew today bookended by husbands (my husband keeping me upright).  It is true that a three cord strand is not easily broken, but it also helps to have a husband to keep me from breaking ranks.  I've been too inundated with all things nuclear throughout the day for various reasons, (that same husband wanting me to watch with him an old Hollywood film about the making of the atom bomb), so I'm now listening to my Sons of the Pioneers songs for a change of pace.  They surprised me, though, slipping in the song, "Old Man Atom."  Sigh, again.   It's good that The Sons of the Pioneers mostly sing the old cowboy songs, because sometimes you just want to be a tumbling tumbleweed.

If Today You've Sowed in Tears

“There is a sacredness in tears. They are not a mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are the messengers of overwhelming grief, of deep contrition and of unspeakable love.”

― Washington Irving

Richard Smallwood & Vision~Sow in Tears
"Sow In Tears"

Darkness will fall and tears will come
For all of these things comes to everyone
But in God's Word, It's promised to us
If you sow in tears you'll reap in joy

Tears are for cleansing, stress and relief
Created by God just to give us release
They're not in vain, for soon will come peace
If you sow in tears you'll reap in joy

So don't be afraid to cry
He sees your tears, He hears your prayer
Your mourning, He'll turn to dancing,
This too will pass, your day is comin'
The tears may flow but don't let go
If you sow in tears you'll reap in joy

So don't be afraid to cry
He sees your tears, He hears your prayer
Your mourning, He'll turn to dancing,
This too will pass, your day is comin'
The tears may flow but don't let go

From everlasting to everlasting![a]
And all the people said, “Amen!” and praised the Lord.

Say Amen (Reprise) - Finding Favor
"Say Amen (Reprise)"

If there's anybody here who's found Him faithful
Anybody here who knows He's able
Say Amen.

And if there's anybody here who's seen His power
Anybody here brought through the fire
Say Amen.
Anybody here found joy in the middle of sorrow
Peace in the storm, hope for tomorrow
And seen it time and time again
Just say Amen.

Even in the valley of the shadow
Or when you feel alone in the unknown
Just say Amen, just say Amen.
Even when the storms are raging
Stand and know you are not forsaken
Just say Amen, just say Amen.

Is there anybody here
Tell me is there anybody here
Come on and say Amen.

And if there's anybody here who's seen His power
Anybody here brought through the fire
Say Amen.
Anybody here found joy in the middle of sorrow
Peace in the storm, hope for tomorrow
And seen it time and time again
Just say Amen.

The Other Proverbs Woman

Mona felt like she had a few more things to say to her husband; but, to her surprise, discovered that there were no corners on the top of her house!

Proverbs 21:9 New King James Version (NKJV)
9 Better to dwell in a corner of a housetop,
Than in a house shared with a contentious woman.

Armed with this knowledge, she then went searching for him in the wilderness...

 Proverbs 21:19 New King James Version (NKJV)
19 Better to dwell in the wilderness,
Than with a contentious and angry woman.

But he was last seen hitching a ride...
Proverbs 27:8 New American Standard Bible (NASB)
8 Like a bird that wanders from her nest,
So is a man who wanders from his [a]home.

It was good for Mona that her mother was in that car, and she was able to return him safely home.
Proverbs 31:10King James Version (KJV)
10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

They soon rekindled their love and lived reasonably happy ever after...

22 He who finds a wife finds a good thing

Seek and Build

Now seek the Lord your God with all your heart. Build the sanctuary of the Lord God so that you can bring the Ark of the Lord's covenant and the holy vessels of God into the Temple built to honor the Lord's name. I Chronicles 22:19

Seek and build.

The context here is David rounding up support for his son Solomon to get the Lord's temple built. David has a vision for this, but was told that he wasn't the king who would see it through. Solomon was.

Seek and build. Were they sequential or simultaneous? Were they one time or ongoing? I would say that seeking was praying, which we often think of as the first step of a spiritual project. However, there is a jumping-off point where we ought to do something relative to what we've been praying about. But, God wants our fellowship with him (I John 1:3), so we ought to pray again, then work again, and so on. Maybe that's why we hit snags in our projects, so that we don't take a one-and-done approach to prayer.

I ask myself: when has enough prayer been offered up relative to my "building"? Do I ever procrastinate the building by saying I should pray more? When do I assume I know what I am doing and don't consult God?

Some say the real work is done on one's knees, because it harnesses God's necessary power. In spiritual work, that has to be partially true.  On the other hand, the temple did have to be built through human effort. So should we spend most of our time working or most of our time praying? I think if we do both right along and avoid extremes, well, things will get done.

Seek and build.

I may struggle with this truth at times, but I am not a half-made child of a half-baked god.  I may be in progress but my almighty God, the architect of all creation, will complete me.  He will not abandon His purpose and plan for my life, which will one glorious day be fully realized.  Now if I could just stop meddling in the work He is doing that would be good.  There's no sense in making His job any harder than it already is.
