Following Step by Step

Deuteronomy 29:5
English Standard Version (ESV)
5 I have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandals have not worn off your feet.

1 Peter 2:21
New International Version (NIV)
21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.
My husband met a man today wearing shoes he had purchased in 1971.  It was impressive, amazing, really in our disposable society.  It also demonstrated a difference between men and women, since I don't know of any woman who would wear the same shoe for 40 years.  My mother does have a pair of shoes that old from her first daughter's wedding; but they're kept in pristine condition in the original shoe box in her closet; and I doubt she's worn them since.  As for me, I must wear one style of sensible athletic shoes due to a poorly healed ankle injury and now rheumatoid arthritis, so I may yet become the first woman wearing the same shoe style if not the same shoes for 40 years.  My meandering thoughts on shoes has had me thinking about a Rich Mullin's song, "Sometimes, Step by Step."  It's really good.  My steps may be painful, but not as painful as the steps my Lord took to Calvary.  I will follow Him all of my days, and it would be sweet to enter Heaven with worn out shoes.
Rich Mullins - Sometimes By Step — Fire By Nite, 1992

Sometimes Step by Step Lyrics
Sometimes the night was beautiful
Sometimes the sky was so far away
Sometimes it seemed to stoop so close
You could touch it but your heart would break
Sometimes the morning came too soon
Sometimes the day could be so hot
There was so much work left to do
But so much You'd already done

Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
And I will seek You in the morning
And I will learn to walk in Your ways
And step by step You'll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days

Sometimes I think of Abraham
How one star he saw had been lit for me
He was a stranger in this land
And I am that, no less than he
And on this road to righteousness
Sometimes the climb can be so steep
I may falter in my steps
But never beyond Your reach

Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
Oh God, You are my God
And I will ever praise You
I will seek You in the morning
And I will learn to walk in Your ways
And step by step You'll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days

And I will follow You all of my days
And I will follow You all of my days
And step by step You'll lead me
And I will follow You all of my days
And I will follow You all of my days

(Sometimes the night was beautiful)
(And I will follow You all of my days)
Sometimes the night, it was beautiful
(Sometimes the night was beautiful)
(And I will follow You all of my days)
Oh no, so beautiful
(Sometimes the night was beautiful)
(And I will follow You all of my days)

(And I will follow You all of my days)
(And I will follow You all of my days)
Oh God, you are my God
(And I will follow You all of my days)
Oh God, you are my God
(And I will follow You all of my days)

(And I will follow You all of my days)
Sometimes the night was beautiful
(And I will follow You all of my days)
Sometimes the night
(And I will follow You all of my days)
